He grew rather a lot, in fact, in all directions. Especially given that this wasn't exactly a charismatic sort of bulk, it soon became something of a joke among his neighbours that he must have Giant blood, or that his warty skin indicated troll relatives. Whether there was some small element of truth that made these jokes less obviously humorous, or whether it was just hearing them so often from such a young age, but Garth has never quite realised that they weren't actually, well, jokes. He has come to think that he is in fact descended from giants and trolls, superhumanly strong, and can only be permanently killed by magic or something. Unfortunately, with all the stories about giants and trolls being nasty creatures, descendents of Caine, and so on, this led him to the vague conclusion that he might be damned, and that he was certainly doomed to become an outcast. On the occasions when this started to make him unhappy, he ate to compensate. (Other times, he just ate because he liked his food.) With this idea of his own nature, falling into mercenary service, and subsequently into the role of grog to the Carnac covenant, wasn't at all hard. He spent a year or two there before the mages suggested to him that he might do well to join the new foundation they were sponsoring, and Garth - never a fussy fellow, so long as he is being fed - acquiesced.
