Passing as a boy some of the time, she caught up with her beloved after a few weeks - just in time to be trapped in a besieged manor-house, in the middle of the Albigensian Crusade. (Elli frankly doesn't know or think much about religion, and will take communion in any available church.) The next few weeks taught her a great deal, much of it regarding use of the crossbow. Eventually, when a large body of Crusaders under Simon de Montfort himself arrived on the scene, the manor fell to direct assault. In the carnage that followed, Elli found a hiding place; her lover was not so fortunate. The Crusaders happily followed the famous injunction about treatment of possible Albigensians... In the next few years, Elli wandered north, mainly out of a latent sense of self-preservation. She had managed to hold on to a crossbow, and this kept her alive. (Not, it should be said, entirely unharmed.) She might have turned south again when she started meeting people who regarded her accent as the mark of a heretic, except that she chanced to meet a travelling magus and his guards on the road. In a moment of inspiration, she offered her services to the party, and proved her skill with the crossbow. The wizard, a crankish character, accepted her offered fealty, and took her home with his other guards - to Carnac. Now, with that Covenant offering support to a new foundation, Elli, as one of the guards with fewest roots, has been offered the chance to establish herself at the heart of a new band of grogs. She has accepted, but perhaps the wizards don't realise that, as she has recovered from her bitter experiences, she has regained a sense of a mission. So far, this remains latent, but should any member of the house of De Montfort ever pass in front of her crossbow...
