Then there came the day when an old wild boar, driven mad by a broken tusk, blundered into the fields and menaced a couple of women. Alain, with no apparent pause to consider, picked up the nearest agricultural implement to hand and killed the beast. Soon after that, Alain's parish priest was called out to baptise a sickly infant on a remote farm one stormy night when the wolves were howling, and - remembering the boar - he hinted that Alain might come along. Alain did, and when two bold (or starving) wolves emerged from the trees, he stove their skulls in with his axe. This sort of adventure soon started looking like a habit with Alain; it wasn't that he was an especially great fighter, as that he possessed no discernible awareness that he might lose these fights. Given his strength, some skill, and the nature of most wolves and bandits, this was enough. He even acquired the nickname of "The Warrior". The girls were impressed; unfortunately, the peasant wives were even more impressed, and Alain proved an obliging lad... Naturally, this career was noted by various bailiffs and manor-servants as well as by Alain's neighbours. While Alain showed no great sign of resenting his position, it did occur to Lady Marta that this energy and valour might be most safely directed away from simple village life - especially given the number of complaints that were filtering through from jealous husbands. Then the mages showed up as new neighbours. So Marta spoke to Alain, and offered him a chance to make something of himself. She would release him from his serfdom in exchange for a simple, solemn vow; that he would serve the mages faithfully in whatever lawful employment they might offer, but that he would never take up arms against Lady Marta, her family, or their allies. He would also deal openly with any of Lady Marta's servants who spoke with him - oh, and he would never mention this same vow to his new employers. Alain, who rather fancied honest employ that didn't involve twelve hours a day in the fields, and who seemed oddly keen to impress Lady Marta, accepted cheerfully.
